Living in Mount Isa

Mount Isa is a modern city that has developed over 100 years on the back of the ining industry. With a population of around 22,000, Mount Isa offers a diverse range of services, retail, cultural experiences and sporting opportunities. With a friendly, self-sufficient community well used to welcoming newcomers, it should not take any new starter long to fit in. Events like the world-famous Mount Isa Rodeo and the Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic provide a focus for the community.

A feature of the Mount Isa landscape is nearby Lake Moondarra. Famous for fishing and water sports, Lake Moondarra is also recognised as a nationally important wetland, habitat for many bird species. Further afield is Boodjamulla National Park and Lawn Hill Gorge, and the World Heritage listed Riversleigh fossil site. There are ample touring and camping opportunities throughout the region.

There is no denying that Mount Isa can be hot in the months leading up to christmas. Air conditioning at work and at home provides respite. The reward follows when the wet season brings spectacular cloud formation, gusty winds and drenching rain. The landscape turns green and the creeks fill up, refreshing us all. The mid-year brings bright, warm, sunny days after crisp clear mornings.

Getting to and from Mount Isa is easy. The city is only two hours flight time from Brisbane and is serviced by three direct return jet flights on most days. There are also flights to Cairns and Townsville and other regional airports. Sealed highways link Mount Isa with Townsville, South East Queensland via Longreach and Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.
