Southern Gulf NRM, in collaboration with Cape York, Gulf Savannah, Terrain NRM, Reef Catchments, Desert Channels Queensland, and NQ Dry Tropics, has secured funding through the Queensland Feral Pig Initiative 8(a) for the Feral Pig Coordination Project under the Biosecurity Preparedness program.
This funding will support the employment of a 0.5 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) Feral Pig Coordinator within each NRM group for three years from July 2024 to June 2027. The coordinators will work together to implement a coordinated, collaborative strategy to manage the feral pig infestation across far north, north, and northwest Queensland in alignment with the guidelines outlined in the Feral Pig Action Plan.
The project partners collectively cover 66% of Queensland (1.2 million square kilometres), encompassing the region with the highest estimated density of feral pigs in Australia. The initiative will engage a wide range of local and regional stakeholders, including government agencies, NRM groups, industry organisations, Land and Sea Ranger groups, Traditional Owners, and landholders. The primary goal is to boost participation in coordinated, landscape-scale feral pig control efforts across the region.
The outcome of these activities will be a strengthened capacity among all stakeholders to implement best-management practices specific to the region, coordinate efforts effectively, and prepare for potential disease outbreaks. This will lead to the suppression of feral pig populations, thereby reducing their impact on agriculture, cultural heritage, environmental assets.
This project is supported by the Queensland Government through funding from the Queensland Feral Pest Initiative.
