The Freshwater Sawfish (Pristis pristis) is a critically endangered species that relies on the riverine systems of northern Queensland – particularly the Leichhardt, Gregory, and Nicholson Rivers – as key nursery habitats. These waterways are integral to pastoral operations, providing essential water resources for livestock. This project aims to protect and restore freshwater sawfish habitats by implementing strategic riparian fencing, off-stream watering systems, and revegetation across priority properties. Through partnerships with landholders, Traditional Owners, and researchers, the project will improve water quality, riparian condition, and species resilience while promoting sustainable grazing management.
This project is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by Southern Gulf NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
