DRFA 2019 Riverine Site Maintenance Program

The Riverine Rehabilitation Program, to be delivered by Southern Gulf NRM – aims to enhance the resilience of previous disaster recovery sites by providing maintenance works, training and upskilling, and ongoing site monitoring. Specific activities include weed control, erosion repair works, fencing, watering system maintenance, and revegetation activities. The program also focuses on capacity building through the delivery of training courses, a community revegetation workshop, and mentorship opportunities.

Key outcomes of the project include:

  • Upskilling and Training: Staff and community groups will be equipped with the necessary skills to design, map, and implement revegetation plans, establish and manage a native nursery, conduct site assessments, and operate drones for monitoring purposes.
  • Improved Site Resilience: The program will enhance the longevity and effectiveness of two previous riverine recovery sites by maintaining revegetation and maintenance works for long-term riverbank stabilisation.
  • Partnership Building: Collaboration with stakeholders and experts will strengthen community engagement and support local needs.
  • Job Creation: The program will generate regional employment opportunities, including First Nations people.
  • Risk Reduction: The program will mitigate risks associated with the failure of previous on-ground works and the lack of capacity for future rehabilitation projects.
  • Ongoing Monitoring and Assessments: The sites will be regularly monitored to assess the effectiveness of the revegetation and maintenance efforts and ensure the sustainability of the riverine environments.
