Our Work People and Community Community Litter Project
Southern Gulf NRM have commenced works under the Community Litter Project which forms part of the Environment and Great Barrier Reef Minister, Meaghan Scanlon’s package of 28 community-driven projects which are funded by the Palaszczuk Government and are aimed at cleaning up the state’s beaches, rivers, and creeks.
Over a two year period Southern Gulf NRM are committed to undertaking 24 community litter clean ups through our region which are high profile, with high people traffic and with high biodiversity value, engaging community groups and volunteers. Furthermore, Southern Gulf NRM have also attended and cleaned a further 12 sites and will continue to monitor them, tracking the frequency of litter deployment throughout the region. Information on litter collected from the 12 monitoring sites can be found below.
The community litter clean ups are already under way with Southern Gulf NRM joining forces with Mount Isa City Council to remove a whopping 4 tonnes of rubbish from the Leichardt Riverbed between Casey Street and the Isa Street Bridge.
Councillor for Environmental Management, Waste Management and Environmental Health, Paul Stretton, said the activity achieved “an excellent result and everyone involved should be commended for their hard work in what was a significant operation.”
Further community clean ups have been planned and will be conducted shortly. If you would like to participate in the program or would like more information please contact our team.
