Knowledge Gaps

The capacity of the SGC to answer major questions related to management of natural resources and to determine the extent to which known threats are impacting on the Region’s assets is limited by a lack of natural resource information appropriate to the purpose. Hence, the SGC seeks to update its current database of natural resource information to determine whether existing gaps in knowledge can be addressed using more recent research and also to identify a prioritised set of data deficient areas to help direct future research and on ground NRM activities.

Help us fill these gaps:

Atmosphere
  • Improved management options for bush fires and impacts of bush fires on GHG
  • Carbon accounting

Renewable energy
  • Current use of renewable energy
  • How to encourage the uptake of renewable energy

Land
  • Extent of erosion
  • Impact of continuous grazing on soil, flora and fauna
  • Feral animal distribution, status and impacts
  • Appropriate fire regime for bioregions

Inland waters
  • Ecological impacts of extraction from surface and groundwater – including salinity risk, cultural significance and impact on water storages and altered flow regimes
  • Water quality
  • Recharge, water quality, capacity and connectivity of sub-artesian aquifer
  • Time scale mapping and ecological assessment of wetlands
  • Baseline data on current condition and connectivity of physical barriers within waters
  • Impacts of recreational and commercial fishing
  • What are sustainable grazing practices for riparian zones
  • Distribution and impact of terrestrial and aquatic weeds and feral animals
  • Affects on the natural environment from flooding, storm surges and sea level

Biodiversity
  • Baseline mapping and ecosystem function
  • Impact of climate change
  • Impact of harvesting species

Coastal and marine
  • Remote sensed data on coastal habitats to monitor change
  • Impact of trawling on soft bottom habitats
  • Impacts on developing water resources and land use changes especially on mangrove communities
  • Impacts of cattle, pest plants and animals on dune systems
  • Importance/dependence of fishing for indigenous people
  • Extent and causes of marine debris
  • Impacts from commercial shipping
  • Risk of acid sulphate soils
  • Climate change

Human settlement
  • Impacts of population decline on natural resources and management capacities
  • Tourist numbers and impacts
  • Linkages between communities economic health and willingness to commit to NRM programs
